Improving Heating Efficiency & Air Circulation with Destratification Fans for Military Bases

Military installations contain some of the most demanding building environments, including aircraft hangars, vehicle maintenance bays, machine shops, warehouses, training facilities, and other large high-bay structures. These spaces often combine high ceilings, large exterior doors, substantial equipment loads, and long operating hours. When conditioned air collects above the occupied zone instead of reaching personnel and work areas, heating and cooling systems can consume significantly more energy than necessary. Airius destratification fans can help military facilities redistribute conditioned air, improve working conditions, and make more efficient use of existing HVAC systems.

Challenge

The Challenge

Large military maintenance and industrial buildings are particularly susceptible to thermal stratification. During heating season, warm air naturally rises into high roof spaces while personnel remain at floor level. Hangar and bay doors can also introduce substantial temperature changes when opened, requiring HVAC systems to recover quickly after operations resume.

Aircraft hangars present additional challenges because circulation systems must work around overhead cranes, radiant heating systems, fire suppression equipment, lighting, aircraft clearances, and required exhaust ventilation. Department of Defense hangar design guidance specifically recognizes focused destratification fans as an option for improving air mixing, returning heat to occupied levels, and improving comfort and efficiency.

Without effective circulation, military facilities may consume additional energy simply trying to compensate for conditioned air that is already inside the building but trapped where it provides little benefit.

Solution

The Airius Solution

Airius fans can provide controlled air circulation throughout high-bay military facilities, helping move conditioned air between ceiling and occupied levels while complementing existing heating, cooling, and ventilation systems.

For military bases, two Airius systems are particularly well suited.

Onyx Fans

Onyx EC Series

The Onyx EC Series is particularly well suited for vehicle maintenance bays, workshops, equipment facilities, and other large spaces where stronger circulation or supplemental cooling is required. Designed for powerful air circulation and cooling, standard Onyx EC models can cover approximately 2,000 square feet and operate in spaces with ceilings up to 50 feet. Variable-speed controls allow airflow to be adjusted around vehicle activity, seasonal conditions, and different operational zones.

Air Pear Series

Air Pear EC Series

The Air Pear EC Series is ideal for aircraft hangars, machine shops, warehouses, training buildings, and other large military spaces with significant ceiling heights. Its focused columnar airflow helps return accumulated ceiling-level heat toward occupied work areas while improving circulation throughout the building. Multiple models accommodate ceiling heights from approximately 15 to 100 feet, allowing the system to be matched to facilities ranging from maintenance shops to very large hangars. EC motor options also provide variable-speed operation and integration with BACnet or 0–10V building controls, allowing airflow to respond to changing occupancy and operating conditions.

Benefits

Potential Benefits

A properly engineered Airius installation could help reduce temperature stratification, improve comfort at occupied levels, shorten heating recovery periods, reduce unnecessary HVAC runtime, and improve circulation throughout large maintenance and operational spaces. By redistributing conditioned air that would otherwise remain trapped near high ceilings, military facilities may be able to improve heating and cooling efficiency without immediately increasing HVAC capacity.

Results

Proven Results

The Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division needed to improve heating efficiency inside its 7,000-square-foot Building 9 Green Room machine shop in West Bethesda, Maryland.

With a 27-foot ceiling, warm air accumulated overhead while personnel at floor level remained in cooler conditions. The facility’s electric heat pump system consequently operated longer to maintain comfortable working temperatures.

The Navy Techval team installed six Airius Model 40 destratification fans above the facility’s 21-foot overhead crane system. Each fan consumed only 54 watts and was integrated without modifying the existing heat pump or ductwork.

Following installation, heating-system runtime was reduced by 40%, generating $1,568 in estimated annual energy savings. Personnel also reported improved comfort, particularly during early morning periods when heating demand had previously been highest.

enhancing heating efficiency

Defend your base against high energy costs

Every military installation has different mission requirements, ceiling heights, door configurations, equipment layouts, HVAC systems, and ventilation requirements. Airius systems can be selected and positioned around those conditions, with installations coordinated around cranes, aircraft or vehicle clearances, fire suppression systems, lighting, heating equipment, and required exhaust ventilation.

The objective isn’t simply to add more heating or cooling. It’s to make better use of the conditioned air the facility is already producing.
