Pharmaceutical warehouses must maintain products within defined environmental conditions throughout the entire storage area, not simply where thermostats and sensors are located. In high-bay facilities, thermal stratification can create significant temperature differences between floor level and upper pallet racks.

For pharmaceutical distributors and manufacturers, these temperature variations can become a product-quality and compliance issue. FDA guidance calls for pharmaceutical materials to be stored under appropriate temperature and humidity conditions when required and for critical storage conditions to be monitored and documented.

Maintaining an acceptable thermostat reading does not necessarily mean every pallet position within a pharmaceutical warehouse is experiencing the same temperature. High ceilings and densely packed racking can allow warm air to accumulate at upper levels while cooler air remains closer to the floor. Areas near exterior walls, loading doors, ceilings, and HVAC supply points can experience additional variation.

Those differences matter when temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical products are stored throughout the vertical height of the warehouse. An excursion at the upper rack level can potentially jeopardize inventory even while conditions near floor-level sensors remain acceptable.

This exact problem occurred at a newly constructed 49,200-square-foot pharmaceutical warehouse. During temperature validation testing, temperatures at the upper levels of the pallet racking reached as high as 73°F even though the facility had a new HVAC system. The temperature variation threatened the facility’s ability to open as scheduled.

The Onyx EC Series provides another option for larger storage areas where stronger circulation or additional cooling-focused airflow is required. Designed for powerful air circulation in large, high-ceiling spaces, the standard Onyx EC can cover approximately 2,000 square feet and operate in spaces with ceilings up to 50 feet. Variable-speed control allows airflow to be adjusted according to warehouse conditions while integration with building-management systems provides additional operational control.

Air Pear Series

Air Pear EC Series

The Air Pear EC Series is the primary recommendation for pharmaceutical storage and was the solution selected for the pharmaceutical warehouse case study. Its focused columnar airflow is designed to move ceiling-level air toward the floor, where it spreads throughout the space and becomes recirculated. Multiple Air Pear models accommodate different ceiling heights and coverage requirements, making the system adaptable to high-bay pharmaceutical warehouses and complex racking configurations. EC motors also provide variable-speed operation and integration with BACnet or 0–10V building controls, allowing circulation to become part of the facility's overall environmental-control strategy.

Proven Results

At the 49,200-square-foot pharmaceutical warehouse, Airius worked with the facility engineer and an independent CFD company to analyze the airflow problem and determine appropriate fan placement.

Air Pear Series fans were installed throughout the warehouse with particular attention to areas experiencing significant temperature discrepancies.

Following installation, temperatures throughout the racking were brought within the required range and the facility successfully opened on schedule. According to the project’s mechanical engineer, the HVAC system had operated for approximately 18 months without any temperature-alarm excursions following installation of the Airius system.

Every pharmaceutical warehouse has different product requirements, rack heights, ceiling heights, HVAC configurations, loading patterns, and temperature specifications.
