Reducing Museum Heating Energy Use by 60% at Axeman’s Hall of Fame

reducing museum heating energy

The Axeman’s Hall of Fame is a heritage museum in Latrobe, Tasmania, used for exhibitions, markets, performances, and community events. Despite having substantial heating capacity, the approximately 400-square-metre building had struggled with uncomfortable winter temperatures for many years. Airius Air Pear fans were trialled to improve temperature consistency throughout the museum while reducing the amount of energy required to heat the space.

Challenge

The museum’s roof reaches approximately eight metres above floor level, allowing heated air to rise and accumulate overhead rather than remaining within the occupied area. Increasing the building’s heating capacity had failed to solve the problem. Five heating units were being used, yet customers continued to complain about cold conditions.

The museum needed a way to recover the heat already being produced and distribute it more evenly throughout the building without requiring additional heating equipment.
Solution & Installation

Four Model 25 Airius Air Pear fans were installed within the roof zone and evenly spaced throughout the room. The system was equipped with a speed controller to regulate airflow. The Air Pear fans continuously returned warm air accumulating near the ceiling to floor level, helping create a more consistent temperature throughout the museum.

The impact was almost immediate. Within two days of operation, the museum manager was able to turn off 60% of the existing heating because the building had become too warm with all of the original heating equipment operating.
Results

The Airius installation produced significant improvements in both heating efficiency and visitor comfort.

Key benefits included:

  • 60% reduction in heating use within two days
  • Only two heating units required instead of five
  • More consistent temperatures throughout the building
  • Improved comfort for visitors and staff
  • Reduced heat accumulation at ceiling level
  • Lower heating energy consumption
  • Improved use of heat already being generated
  • Positive feedback from regular customers who had previously complained about cold conditions

...I still could not grasp how the building could benefit from just four Air Pear units when this was the coldest time of year. They were switched on that afternoon and the following morning the building was heated to a consistent temperature with the heated areas being evenly controlled….

We previously needed five units to heat the building and this was not effective but with the efficiency of the Airius Air Pears we now only require two. The units have achieved an atmosphere of warmth and welcome to the Australian Axeman’s Hall of Fame….

I would have no hesitation in recommending the Airius Air Pear units to anyone hoping to maintain a more controlled and even heat in a large building.

The Smurfit Kappa project demonstrates how targeted air purification can support employee health and indoor air quality within manufacturing environments. By positioning Airius PureAir units in changing rooms and canteens, the company added continuous air purification in areas where employees gathered most frequently while also benefiting from improved airflow and heat recirculation.
