Poultry rearing sheds require consistent temperatures at floor level where the birds are housed, yet conventional heating systems can waste significant energy by heating the roof and upper portions of the building first. Scolexia Pty Ltd implemented an Airius destratification system to improve heat distribution, reduce gas consumption, and create better environmental conditions throughout the poultry shed.
Thermal stratification presented a costly problem within the poultry shed. Warm air produced by the gas heating system naturally rose toward the roof, meaning the roof and upper building cavity were heated before warmth reached the birds at floor level. Because heating represents one of the largest non-feed expenses associated with poultry rearing, this inefficient heat distribution increased gas consumption and operating costs.
The environment also presented additional challenges. Any airflow solution needed to withstand dust and contaminants, address biosecurity concerns, maintain comfortable conditions for the birds, and operate without disrupting bedding or existing equipment.Airius destratification fans were installed to continuously recirculate warm air accumulating near the roof back toward floor level where it was needed. By recovering and redistributing this otherwise wasted heat, the system allowed the building to reach and maintain suitable temperatures using less gas.
The fans specified for the project operated at only 17.4 watts each, providing continuous air circulation with minimal electrical consumption. Their sealed motor housings protected internal components from dust and contaminants found within the poultry shed environment. The system was also designed for simple installation and can be incorporated into either existing poultry sheds or new construction with minimal disruption. The Airius installation produced significant operational, environmental, and animal welfare benefits, including:
- 20% to 50% reduction in heating costs
- Approximately 21.8 tonnes of CO₂ savings annually
- Reduced gas consumption
- More consistent temperatures at bird level
- Improved bird well-being
- Continuous airflow helping keep bedding dry
- Reduced wear and tear on the existing heating system
- Low electrical consumption at only 17.4 watts per fan
- Improved biosecurity and environmental conditions
The poultry shed installation demonstrates how destratification can substantially improve heating efficiency in agricultural environments. By continuously returning warm air from the roof to floor level, the Airius system reduced unnecessary gas consumption while creating more consistent conditions where the birds are actually housed.
With heating savings ranging from 20% to 50%, reduced carbon emissions, low fan energy consumption, and additional benefits for bedding conditions and bird well-being, the system provided both immediate operating savings and long-term environmental benefits.
