National Resource Management Inc. (NRM), a leader in energy solutions for industrial refrigeration, partnered with Airius to optimize energy usage in a cold storage warehouse with 36-foot ceilings. The facility had been relying on power-intensive 1–2 horsepower ventilation motors totaling 62 kW of load. These motors cycled every 7 minutes, consuming large amounts of electricity to maintain temperature control. By integrating Airius Air Pear fans as part of their controls strategy, NRM was able to extend motor cycle intervals and deliver significant reductions in energy usage—resulting in $42,000 in savings over just five months.
NRM implemented a comprehensive energy-saving strategy that included installing 70 low-wattage Airius Air Pear destratification fans across the warehouse ceiling. These fans continuously recirculated the conditioned air, maintaining consistent temperatures throughout the facility. With destratification in place, NRM's controls were able to extend ventilation motor cycles from every 7 minutes to every 20 minutes, significantly cutting electricity usage. Each fan draws minimal power compared to the ventilation motors, which made the swap both efficient and cost-effective.
The installation required no modifications to existing infrastructure and seamlessly integrated with NRM’s advanced control systems. The result was a synchronized system that used precise temperature balance and automated cycling to optimize performance. The Airius + NRM solution achieved an average 33.28% reduction in energy usage and a total refrigeration savings of 60% over the first five months of operation. Energy use dropped by as much as 38.7% in January alone. The system generated a total of $42,000 in savings, proving the long-term value of destratification when paired with smart control technologies.
The data showed that daily energy consumption dropped significantly across all five months:
- November: 22.88%
- December: 35.52%
- January: 38.72%
- February: 38.38%
- March: 30.90%
By replacing short-cycle, high-wattage ventilation with efficient, continuous destratification, the facility not only saved on utility costs but also reduced wear and tear on its equipment.
This case study proves how integrating Airius Air Pear Fans with NRM’s control systems can transform energy management in cold storage environments. By addressing thermal stratification at its core, the facility achieved better performance, reduced maintenance demands, and significant cost savings.
