Improving Comfort and Cooling Efficiency with Destratification Fans for Gyms & Fitness Studios
Gyms and fitness studios generate substantial internal heat from physical activity, equipment, lighting, and fluctuating occupancy. Maintaining comfortable conditions can be particularly challenging during high-intensity classes or peak membership hours when cooling demand rises quickly.
Effective air movement can improve perceived comfort without relying exclusively on additional air conditioning. Airius fans can help distribute conditioned air, reduce stagnant areas, and provide targeted airflow throughout workout spaces while consuming relatively little energy.
The Challenge
Fitness facilities rarely have uniform cooling requirements. Weight-training areas, cardio floors, cycling rooms, group fitness studios, functional training spaces, and recovery areas may all operate at different activity levels and occupancies. Equipment can also restrict airflow, while low ceilings or crowded overhead infrastructure can limit options for conventional ceiling fans.
During exercise, increased air movement itself can play an important role in thermal comfort by helping the body dissipate heat. This creates an opportunity for fitness facilities to improve comfort through air circulation rather than relying entirely on lower air-conditioning setpoints.
Virgin Active faced exactly this challenge at its flagship Barangaroo fitness center in Sydney. The facility included cycling, yoga, boxing, weight training, and other exercise areas, but relatively low ceilings and limited mounting locations made conventional ceiling and HVLS fans impractical. The facility needed effective cooling airflow that would remain compact, quiet, and unobtrusive.
The Airius Solution
Airius fans can provide targeted airflow throughout fitness facilities, helping conditioned air reach active areas while increasing air movement around occupants. Different fan models can be selected according to ceiling height, workout type, room configuration, and desired airflow.
For gyms and fitness studios, two Airius systems are particularly well suited.

Retail EC Series
The Retail Series EC is particularly well suited for fitness studios, cycling rooms, cardio areas, and facilities with lower ceilings or limited mounting space. Its compact design allows effective airflow without the large rotating blades associated with conventional ceiling fans. Variable-speed operation provides additional control for spaces such as yoga studios that may require gentler airflow and high-intensity workout areas where greater air movement is beneficial. At Virgin Active, the Retail Series provided 0–100% speed control and BMS integration while consuming approximately 30 watts per unit. Destratification Fans by Airius

Onyx EC Series
The Onyx EC Series is ideal for larger gyms, functional training areas, indoor fitness centers, and spaces where stronger cooling-focused airflow is required. Designed specifically for powerful air circulation and cooling in athletic facilities, the Onyx EC can provide coverage up to approximately 2,000 square feet per standard unit in spaces with ceilings up to 50 feet. Variable-speed EC motors allow airflow to be adjusted according to occupancy and activity level, while BACnet or 0–10V integration enables coordination with existing building controls. Airius currently identifies the Onyx Series as one of its recommended solutions for gyms and fitness studios.
Potential Benefits
A properly designed Airius installation could help improve perceived cooling during exercise, reduce stagnant air and hot spots, distribute conditioned air more consistently, and improve comfort across different workout zones.
Increased air movement may also allow facilities to reduce their dependence on mechanical cooling alone, helping existing HVAC systems maintain comfortable conditions more efficiently. Variable-speed controls provide additional flexibility, allowing airflow to change between high-intensity training, group classes, lower-activity periods, and different seasonal conditions.
Proven Results
Virgin Active selected Airius fans for its flagship Barangaroo fitness center after determining that conventional ceiling and HVLS fans were unsuitable for the facility’s relatively low ceilings and architectural requirements.
Airius Retail Series fans were installed throughout cycling, yoga, boxing, weight-training, and other exercise areas. Their compact dimensions allowed them to fit within limited ceiling space while providing targeted airflow across large areas.
The installation delivered an immediate cooling effect and improved comfort throughout the gym and studio areas. It also allowed Virgin Active to reduce the amount of air-conditioning ductwork required, creating capital savings in addition to lowering operating energy requirements.
Each fan consumed approximately 30 watts while providing full speed control and BMS integration. The system proved successful enough that Airius fans were subsequently installed at two additional Virgin Active locations in Sydney.
Make sure your airflow is fit
Every fitness facility has different ceiling heights, equipment layouts, workout zones, occupancy patterns, and cooling requirements. Airius systems can be selected and controlled around those conditions, using compact Retail Series fans where space and targeted airflow are priorities and Onyx Series fans where larger workout areas require stronger cooling-focused circulation.
The objective isn’t simply to lower the thermostat. It’s to create the air movement people need when they’re working hardest.
