Improving Comfort and Air Distribution with Destratification Fans for K-12 Schools
K-12 schools contain a wide variety of spaces with very different heating, cooling, and occupancy demands. Classrooms may fill and empty throughout the day, while cafeterias, gymnasiums, libraries, auditoriums, and common areas can accommodate hundreds of students beneath much higher ceilings.
Maintaining comfortable temperatures across all of these environments can be difficult, particularly in older buildings or large spaces where conditioned air does not distribute evenly. Airius destratification fans can help schools reduce temperature stratification, improve air circulation, and make better use of existing HVAC systems.
The Challenge
Schools rarely experience the same environmental conditions throughout an entire building. Classrooms along exterior walls may behave differently from interior rooms. Cafeterias and multipurpose spaces can experience rapidly changing heat loads as occupancy increases. Gymnasiums and auditoriums contain large volumes of air where warm conditioned air can accumulate far above students and staff.
Performance spaces present an additional challenge because improving circulation cannot come at the expense of acoustics. At Notre Dame High School in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, the new 1,200-seat theater had an average floor-to-ceiling height of approximately 30 feet. The HVAC design needed to maintain nearly uniform temperatures from the orchestra level to the mezzanine while remaining extremely quiet during performances.
The Airius Solution
Airius fans can supplement existing school HVAC systems by continuously redistributing conditioned air throughout occupied spaces, reducing temperature differences without requiring major ductwork modifications.
For K-12 schools, two Airius systems are particularly well suited.

Q EC Series
The Q Series EC is ideal for auditoriums, theaters, gymnasiums, libraries, cafeterias, and other school environments where effective circulation must remain quiet and unobtrusive. Its specialized motor mounting system is designed to reduce operational noise while Airius' patented airflow technology provides gentle circulation throughout large spaces. Models can serve ceilings up to 50 feet, while EC motors provide variable-speed operation and integration with BACnet or 0–10V building controls. Suspended EC Series
The Suspended EC Series is particularly well suited for classrooms, libraries, offices, corridors, and other areas with traditional drop ceilings. Each unit replaces a standard 24-inch by 24-inch ceiling tile and isolates the ceiling plenum so only air within the occupied room is circulated. This allows schools to improve temperature distribution without introducing visually intrusive equipment into classrooms or requiring extensive modifications to existing ceilings. EC motor options provide variable-speed operation and can integrate with school building-management systems for centralized control.
Potential Benefits
A properly engineered Airius installation could help reduce hot and cold spots, improve temperature consistency between occupied and ceiling levels, increase comfort for students and staff, and help existing HVAC systems distribute conditioned air more effectively. Different Airius systems can also be matched to individual school environments, using discreet suspended units in classrooms and quiet, long-throw Q Series fans in larger spaces such as auditoriums and gymnasiums. Improved destratification may also reduce unnecessary heating and cooling demand by returning conditioned air to the areas where students and staff actually spend their time.
Proven Results
Notre Dame High School needed its new 1,200-seat theater to maintain nearly uniform temperatures throughout a 30-foot-high space without introducing HVAC noise that could interfere with performances.
The mechanical design used three centrally located rooftop units supplying conditioned air at low airflow rates, while twelve Airius Q-50-EC fans quietly distributed that air throughout the auditorium and down to occupant level. Following installation, air temperature and floor-level temperature were reported as nearly identical throughout the theater, from front to back and from the orchestra level to the mezzanine.
The system also operated at a sound level described as comparable to a quiet library, allowing the school to achieve consistent comfort without compromising the theater’s acoustic requirements. The completed project received an Excellence in Construction Award.
Better airflow is now in session
Every school has different classroom layouts, ceiling heights, building ages, HVAC systems, occupancy schedules, and specialized spaces. Airius systems can be selected and positioned around those conditions, using Suspended Series fans where discreet classroom integration is important and Q Series fans where high ceilings and acoustic performance present greater challenges.
The objective isn’t simply to heat or cool the school. It’s to make sure the conditioned air reaches the students and staff it was intended for.
