Improving Comfort and Energy Efficiency with Destratification Fans for Retail Spaces & Malls
Retail stores and malls or shopping centers must maintain comfortable conditions across spaces that can vary dramatically in size, ceiling height, occupancy, and heat load. Showrooms, individual stores, entrances, food and entertainment areas, atriums, and multi-level common spaces can all behave differently within the same building.
When conditioned air accumulates overhead or fails to circulate effectively, shoppers and employees may experience uncomfortable hot and cold areas while HVAC systems continue running in an attempt to reach the desired temperature. Airius destratification fans can help retail facilities distribute conditioned air more effectively, improve comfort, and reduce wasted heating and cooling energy.
The Challenge
Retail environments experience constantly changing conditions. Exterior doors open throughout the day, customer traffic fluctuates, lighting and equipment generate heat, and large glazed storefronts can introduce significant solar gain or heat loss. In high-ceiling stores and shopping centers, warm air can also accumulate far above the occupied zone.
The scale of the problem can be substantial. At Bright Ideas Furniture in Michigan, a 19-foot-high showroom developed a floor-to-ceiling temperature difference exceeding 30°F during a building renovation. Heat accumulated near the ceiling while the occupied area remained cold enough that the remaining rooftop heating units operated almost continuously.
Large shopping centers encounter similar challenges across an even wider variety of spaces. Parquesur Shopping Centre in Madrid experienced hot areas during summer and cold areas during winter because its high ceilings and expansive open spaces made consistent climate control difficult, particularly during periods of high occupancy.
The Airius Solution
Airius fans can provide continuous, controlled circulation throughout retail environments, helping return conditioned air from high ceilings to occupied areas and reducing temperature differences across stores, showrooms, and common spaces.
For retail stores and shopping centers, two Airius systems are particularly well suited.

Air Pear EC Series
The Air Pear EC Series provides a versatile solution for retail showrooms, large-format stores, shopping areas, and other spaces with high or exposed ceilings. Its focused columnar airflow helps move accumulated ceiling-level air back toward shoppers and employees while continuously circulating conditioned air throughout the space. Multiple models accommodate different ceiling heights and coverage requirements, while variable-speed EC motors allow airflow to be adjusted as occupancy and seasonal conditions change. Airius specifically identifies retail environments among the applications for the Air Pear Series, and the system is the proven solution used at Bright Ideas Furniture.

Designer EC Series
The Designer EC Series is particularly well suited for shopping centers, atriums, flagship stores, lobbies, and other architecturally prominent retail environments. It provides the same patented Airius airflow technology within a powder-coated aluminum housing that can be customized to complement the surrounding architecture. Models are available for a wide range of ceiling heights, making the Designer Series suitable for everything from individual retail spaces to expansive multi-story atriums. Airius specifically recommends the Designer Series for retail, atriums, lobbies, and other architecturally sensitive applications.
Potential Benefits
A properly designed Airius installation could help reduce floor-to-ceiling temperature differences, eliminate persistent hot and cold areas, improve comfort for shoppers and employees, and help existing HVAC systems distribute conditioned air more effectively. By returning conditioned air from unused ceiling space to the occupied zone, destratification can also reduce unnecessary HVAC runtime and make better use of the heating and cooling energy the facility is already consuming.
For shopping centers with multiple environments, different fan models and control zones can be used to address the specific airflow requirements of stores, atriums, entrances, dining areas, and other common spaces.
Proven Results
Bright Ideas Furniture faced an extreme heating challenge during renovation of its Royal Oak, Michigan showroom. Only three of eight rooftop heating units were operating, while severe thermal stratification created a temperature difference of more than 30°F between the occupied area and the 19-foot ceiling.
After considering additional ductwork and large HVLS fans, the company selected Airius destratification fans because they could be installed quickly without introducing large overhead equipment into the showroom.
The entire Airius system was installed in one day. Within approximately one hour of operation, thermostat readings increased by more than 15°F as previously trapped ceiling heat was redistributed into the occupied space. For the first time in months, the rooftop heating units were able to reach their setpoint and shut down normally.
The improvement was tested almost immediately when outdoor temperatures fell below -30°F during a polar vortex. Despite those extreme conditions, Bright Ideas reported that the Airius system allowed the remaining rooftop units to operate normally while maintaining the required indoor temperature.
AIrius fans is the one-stop shop for better Airflow
Every retail facility has different ceiling heights, storefront layouts, entrances, glazing, HVAC zones, occupancy patterns, and architectural requirements. Airius systems can be selected and positioned around those conditions, using Air Pear fans where effective destratification and flexible coverage are priorities and Designer Series fans where airflow performance must also integrate with the appearance of the space.
The objective isn’t simply to heat or cool more air. It’s to keep the conditioned air where shoppers and employees can actually benefit from it.
