Improving Comfort and Air Circulation with Destratification Fans for Sports Complexes
Sports complexes must maintain comfortable conditions across large, active spaces that can shift rapidly between light use and crowded events. Indoor soccer fields, courts, arenas, spectator areas, and multi-use athletic spaces often combine high ceilings, large air volumes, intense physical activity, and fluctuating occupancy. Airius destratification fans can help improve air movement, reduce hot and cold spots, and support existing heating and cooling systems while creating more consistent conditions for athletes, spectators, and staff.
The Challenge
Large sports facilities are difficult to condition because simply heating or cooling the building does not guarantee that conditioned air reaches the people using it. High ceilings can allow warm air to accumulate overhead during colder months, leaving playing surfaces and spectator areas cooler than intended. During warmer conditions, large crowds, lighting, and physical activity add heat to the space while insufficient air movement can leave the environment feeling stagnant.
SportsPleX, an indoor soccer facility in Fairborn, Ohio, experienced both problems. The facility became too warm during summer and too cold during winter, while inadequate air movement created stagnant conditions that affected players, visitors, and staff.
Large arenas face an additional challenge. Thousands of spectators can create substantial heat loads during events, requiring enough circulation to maintain comfort throughout both seating and competition areas without excessive energy consumption. Ken Rosewall Arena in Sydney encountered exactly this problem during peak summer conditions.
The Airius Solution
Airius fans can provide continuous, controlled circulation throughout large athletic spaces, helping distribute conditioned air more effectively and reduce temperature differences between ceiling and occupied levels.
For sports complexes, two Airius systems are particularly well suited.

Q EC Series
The Q Series EC is an excellent fit for indoor soccer facilities, courts, field houses, and other sports environments where durability and quiet operation are important. The enclosed turbine-style design provides protection in environments where balls or other sports equipment could potentially contact the fan, while its specialized motor mounting helps minimize operational noise. Variable-speed EC motors and building-control integration allow airflow to be adjusted according to occupancy, activity level, and seasonal conditions. SportsPleX selected 12 Airius Q Series fans specifically for their durability, low noise levels, and ease of installation.

Designer EC Series
The Designer EC Series is particularly well suited for arenas, stadiums, spectator areas, and architecturally prominent sports venues. Its customizable powder-coated housing allows the system to blend into visible public spaces while providing effective air circulation across large areas. The Designer Series is also available for high-ceiling environments, making it appropriate for arenas and other large-volume athletic facilities. Ken Rosewall Arena incorporated Designer Series fans as part of a 47-fan Airius installation designed to improve cooling and circulation throughout the venue.
Potential Benefits
A properly engineered Airius installation could help reduce hot and cold spots, improve circulation across playing and spectator areas, reduce temperature stratification, improve perceived comfort during warm conditions, and help existing HVAC systems distribute conditioned air more effectively. Variable-speed operation also allows sports facilities to adjust airflow based on seasonal conditions, training schedules, tournaments, and event attendance rather than operating at one fixed level throughout the day.
Proven Results
SportsPleX installed 12 Airius Q Series fans after first testing a unit within the facility and working with Airius to determine appropriate fan selection and placement.
Following installation, the facility reported significantly improved air movement and more consistent comfort throughout the year. The fans addressed both summer overheating and winter cold spots, creating a more comfortable environment for players, spectators, and staff.
Energy Efficiency doesn't have to be complex
Every sports complex has different ceiling heights, playing surfaces, spectator areas, occupancy levels, HVAC systems, and architectural requirements. Airius systems can be selected and positioned around those conditions, using Q Series fans where durability and quiet operation are priorities and Designer Series fans where large public spaces require both performance and architectural integration.
The objective isn’t simply to move more air. It’s to keep athletes and spectators comfortable wherever they are in the facility.
