Concealed air circulation & perimeter heat management at Sydney Fish Market

concealed air circulation

The new Sydney Fish Market is one of Australia’s most significant civic and architectural developments, combining world-class design with complex environmental performance requirements. Located on Sydney Harbour and designed as a high-traffic public destination, the building required an airflow solution that could support occupant comfort without compromising architectural intent.

Airius was engaged to deliver a discreet, effective air movement system capable of managing perimeter heat ingress, supporting air circulation through internal corridors, and integrating seamlessly within concealed ceiling spaces.

Challenge

Like many large civic buildings, the Sydney Fish Market presented several airflow and design challenges:
  • Heat ingress along the building perimeter
  • Air circulation through tight internal corridors and transition spaces
  • Architecturally sensitive areas where exposed mechanical systems were not acceptable
  • High public occupancy requiring consistent comfort
  • Limited ceiling space requiring concealed installation
Traditional exposed-blade fan systems were not suitable due to visual impact, safety considerations, and architectural constraints.

Solution & Installation

A total of 52 Airius Pearl EC fan units were supplied as part of a fully customized, concealed ceiling installation. The fans were carefully integrated into the ceiling design, creating an airflow solution that is virtually invisible to occupants. Installed around the building perimeter, the system produces an airflow curtain effect that helps limit heat ingress while also supporting air circulation through internal corridors and transitional zones. This approach improves perceived comfort in high-traffic areas without relying solely on conventional air conditioning. The compact design and concealed installation allow the fans to operate continuously in the background, supporting overall building performance while remaining visually unobtrusive.

Results

The completed system delivers several key benefits:
  • Reduced perimeter heat ingress through controlled airflow delivery
  • Improved air circulation in tight corridors and circulation spaces
  • Enhanced comfort in high-traffic public areas
  • Seamless architectural integration with no exposed fan elements
  • A discreet, low-impact solution suitable for landmark civic buildings
The fans are so effectively concealed within the ceiling design that they are difficult to locate on site, demonstrating how airflow performance can be achieved without visual compromise.

This project demonstrates how Airius fans can be customized and concealed to support airflow cooling, air circulation, and thermal control in architecturally sensitive environments. The Sydney Fish Market installation is a strong example of how air movement can enhance comfort and building performance without becoming a visible feature.
