Improving Comfort and Climate Control with Destratification Fans for Stadiums & Arenas

Stadiums and arenas must maintain comfortable conditions across enormous spaces while accommodating dramatic changes in occupancy, heat load, and activity from one event to the next. Thousands of spectators, lighting, concessions, athletes, and event equipment can introduce substantial heat into the building within a short period of time. Airius destratification fans can help improve air distribution throughout these large-volume venues, supporting existing HVAC systems while creating more consistent conditions for spectators, athletes, and staff.

Challenge

The Challenge

Climate control in a stadium or arena can change dramatically depending on how the building is being used. ASHRAE notes that arenas may host everything from sporting events and concerts to exhibitions and conventions, each creating different heating, cooling, and ventilation loads. The size of enclosed stadiums also means that large air volumes and long air-throw distances can make effective air distribution difficult to achieve.

During heavily attended events, thousands of occupants can add significant heat to the space. Seating bowls, concourses, upper levels, and floor areas may experience different conditions, while high ceilings provide enormous volumes where conditioned air can become unevenly distributed. Ken Rosewall Arena in Sydney faced this challenge during peak summer conditions. The combination of its large open interior and heat generated by thousands of spectators made maintaining comfortable temperatures difficult while the venue also needed to control energy consumption.

Solution

The Airius Solution

Airius fans can provide controlled circulation throughout large stadium and arena environments, helping conditioned air reach occupied areas and reducing temperature inconsistencies across large vertical and horizontal distances.

For stadiums and arenas, two Airius systems are particularly well suited.

Air Pear Series

Air Pear EC Series

The Air Pear EC Series provides the long-throw airflow needed for large arenas, seating areas, concourses, and other high-ceiling spaces. Multiple models accommodate ceiling heights ranging from approximately 15 to 100 feet, allowing airflow to be matched to different areas within the venue. Its focused columnar airflow helps circulate conditioned air through large interior volumes, while variable-speed EC motors allow operation to change according to occupancy, event type, and seasonal conditions. BACnet and 0–10V integration also allow Air Pear EC fans to operate as part of the venue's existing building-management system. Airius currently recommends the Air Pear Series specifically for stadium and arena applications.

Onyx Fans

Onyx EC Series

The Onyx EC Series is particularly suited for arenas where powerful circulation and cooling are priorities. Designed for athletic facilities and large open spaces, the Onyx EC provides strong air movement with coverage up to approximately 2,000 square feet per standard unit and ceilings up to 50 feet. Variable-speed EC operation allows airflow to be increased during heavily attended events and reduced when occupancy and cooling demand are lower. Airius also specifically recommends the Onyx Series for stadiums and arenas.

Benefits

Potential Benefits

A properly engineered Airius installation could help improve temperature consistency across seating and event areas, reduce stagnant zones, improve perceived comfort during warm conditions, and help existing HVAC systems distribute conditioned air more effectively throughout large venues.

Variable-speed operation can also help stadiums respond to dramatically different occupancy levels instead of circulating the same volume of air whether the building is nearly empty or hosting thousands of spectators. By improving air distribution rather than simply adding additional cooling capacity, facilities may also be able to reduce unnecessary HVAC demand and make better use of the conditioned air they are already producing.

Results

Proven Results

Ken Rosewall Arena in Sydney, Australia needed a more effective way to maintain comfortable conditions during major sporting events, particularly during peak summer temperatures.

Airius installed a combination of 47 Standard Series and Designer Series fans strategically throughout the arena. The Standard Series units provided high airflow with low energy consumption, while Designer Series fans provided effective circulation in areas where appearance was also an important consideration.

Following installation, the arena reported more consistent cooling throughout the venue and improved comfort for both spectators and athletes. Management also reported improved air quality, better temperature control, and a noticeable reduction in overall energy consumption.

Rosewall Arena

The ticket to better airflow

Every stadium and arena has different seating configurations, ceiling heights, event schedules, occupancy levels, architectural features, and HVAC infrastructure. Airius systems can be selected, positioned, and controlled around those conditions, with different fan models and operating zones serving seating areas, concourses, event floors, training areas, and other parts of the venue.

The objective isn’t simply to move more air through a massive building. It’s to deliver effective air movement where thousands of people actually experience the space.
