Improving Climate Control and Plant Health with Destratification Fans for Greenhouses

Greenhouses depend on carefully controlled temperature, humidity, and air movement to maintain healthy growing conditions throughout the year. Solar gain, cold exterior surfaces, irrigation, plant transpiration, and seasonal temperature swings can create dramatically different conditions within the same structure.

Without effective circulation, warm air can accumulate near the roof while cooler, moisture-laden air remains around the crop. Airius destratification fans can help create more uniform growing conditions by continuously circulating air throughout the greenhouse while supporting existing heating, cooling, and environmental-control systems.

Challenge

The Challenge

Greenhouse climate control is particularly difficult because conditions can vary both vertically and horizontally throughout the growing space. During colder weather, heated air naturally rises toward the greenhouse roof, leaving crops and employees closer to the floor in cooler conditions. Heating systems may continue operating even though significant heat is already present within the structure.

Dense plant canopies can create additional microclimates where air movement is limited and humidity remains elevated. Temperature differences between plants, air, and greenhouse surfaces can also encourage condensation and prolonged leaf moisture.

During warmer conditions, intense solar gain can rapidly increase temperatures, creating additional cooling and ventilation demands. Timberline Gardens in Arvada, Colorado experienced these challenges while trying to maintain consistent temperatures and airflow throughout its greenhouse. Uneven conditions affected both plant growth and employee comfort while increasing the amount of energy required to heat the facility.

Solution

The Airius Solution

Airius fans can provide continuous circulation throughout the greenhouse, helping break down temperature layers and distribute conditioned air more evenly around the growing environment.

For greenhouses, two Airius systems are particularly well suited.

Air Pear Series

Air Pear EC Series

The Air Pear EC Series is an excellent choice for large greenhouse structures and facilities with higher ceilings. Its focused columnar airflow helps return accumulated roof-level heat toward the crop while encouraging circulation throughout the entire air volume. Multiple models allow the system to be matched to different greenhouse heights and layouts. Variable-speed EC motors also allow airflow to be adjusted as outdoor temperatures, plant density, and seasonal growing conditions change. The Air Pear Series is the solution proven at Timberline Gardens.

Onyx Fans

Onyx EC Series

The Onyx EC Series provides a strong option for greenhouses where increased circulation and cooling are also priorities. Designed for powerful air movement, the Onyx EC can help address warm zones created by solar gain while maintaining circulation throughout large growing areas. Variable-speed operation allows airflow to be reduced during cooler periods and increased when solar loads and greenhouse temperatures rise, giving growers greater control over circulation throughout changing daily and seasonal conditions.

Benefits

Potential Benefits

A properly designed Airius installation could help reduce temperature stratification, create more uniform growing conditions, improve circulation through and above plant canopies, reduce stagnant humid zones, and help heating and cooling systems distribute conditioned air more effectively. Improved circulation can also help reduce cold spots and condensation-prone areas while helping leaf and air temperatures remain more consistent throughout the growing environment. By recovering heat that would otherwise accumulate near the greenhouse roof during winter, destratification may also reduce heating demand while keeping more of that energy where the plants actually need it.

Results

Proven Results

Timberline Gardens installed Airius fans to improve temperature consistency and air circulation within its greenhouse in Arvada, Colorado. By redistributing warm air that had accumulated in the upper portions of the greenhouse, the system helped create more consistent growing conditions throughout the occupied and plant zones.

Timberline Gardens reported that the Airius system reduced energy costs by more than 26% and paid for itself within a single winter. The greenhouse also reported increased winter plant growth, healthier plants, improved employee comfort, and an overall improvement in the greenhouse environment following installation.

The project demonstrated that improving air circulation could provide benefits beyond energy savings by creating more consistent conditions for both plants and the people working around them.

Better airflow can be a beautiful thing

Every greenhouse has different crops, canopy densities, ceiling heights, heating systems, glazing, irrigation practices, and environmental targets. Airius systems can be selected and controlled around those conditions, using Air Pear fans where long-throw destratification is needed and Onyx fans where stronger circulation and cooling support are priorities.

The objective isn’t simply to move greenhouse air. It’s to create more consistent growing conditions throughout the entire crop.
