Improved Customer Comfort and Energy Efficiency at Morrisons with Airius Fans

Morrisons, one of the largest supermarket chains in the UK, is continually seeking ways to reduce energy costs and its carbon footprint while enhancing customer comfort. In 2007, Mitton Mechanical approached Airius to conduct a trial of the Airius fan system at the Morrisons Knottingley store in Wakefield. The trial proved highly successful, leading to the installation of Airius units in hundreds of stores across the country.

Challenge

The primary challenge faced by Morrisons was maintaining customer comfort, especially in the cold chiller and freezer aisles, where temperatures often felt excessively cold compared to the warmer areas of the store. This discrepancy not only affected the customer experience but also decreased the amount of time shoppers spent in these aisles, reducing overall spend. Furthermore, existing solutions like ducting systems and under-cabinet heaters had failed to address these issues efficiently.

Solution

Mitton Mechanical installed Airius units at 4-meter intervals in three chiller aisles of the Knottingley store. These Airius fans reduced temperature stratification from 6-8ºC to just 1-2ºC, creating a more comfortable shopping environment without impacting the performance of the chiller units. The system also provided continuous airflow that quickly evaporated spills and eliminated the fogging on chiller and freezer cabinets, keeping products clearly visible.

Results

The trial exceeded expectations, with immediate improvements in customer comfort, leading to increased browse time and higher aisle spend. The success of the initial installation prompted Morrisons to retrofit over 400 stores with the Airius fan system. The system is now part of the standard specification for all new Morrisons stores and is integrated into their refurbishment programs. Additionally, Morrisons became the first supermarket in the UK to be awarded the prestigious Carbon Trust Standard, recognizing their efforts to reduce carbon emissions and energy consumption.
