Keeping Moviegoers Warm at Temple Cinema with Airius Air Pear Fans

keeping a theater warm

The historic Temple Cinema in Houlton, Maine, has been a beloved part of the community since it was built in 1918. When lifelong movie enthusiast Charlie Forier purchased the two-screen theater, he was determined to preserve its charm while enhancing guest comfort—especially during Maine’s cold winters. After discovering that the building’s heating system left large parts of the space chilly, he turned to Airius Air Pear Fans for a solution that would balance temperatures without impacting the theater’s quiet ambiance.

Challenge

The cinema relied on baseboard hot water radiators, all located at the front of the auditoriums. During winter, most of the warm air rose and became trapped behind large architectural beams running across the ceiling, leaving moviegoers seated toward the back—or in the cozy balconies—feeling cold. Patrons were even known to bring blankets from home just to stay warm through a movie.

Charlie needed a way to circulate warm air throughout the theaters, especially to the back rows and upper levels, without disrupting the acoustics or visual experience for guests.

Solution & Installation

To address the problem, Charlie installed two Airius Model 15 Air Pear fans, positioning them on the bottom of the front beams and angling them back to move warm air up the aisles. The fans were selected for their ability to deliver effective destratification in ceiling heights of 15–18 feet, which matched the dimensions of the auditoriums.

The fans’ quiet operation was critical—they blended seamlessly into the space, delivering noticeable results without producing noise that could interfere with the movie experience.

Results

After installation, guests quickly noticed the difference. The previously cold seats in the back of the theaters and balcony areas became much more comfortable, and patrons no longer needed to bring extra layers or blankets to stay warm. The warm air was evenly circulated throughout the auditoriums, greatly improving the overall comfort level for moviegoers.

Although it was too early to measure definitive energy savings, Charlie believed the Airius system would help significantly reduce heating costs, which are substantial during winters in northern Maine.

The success of the Airius Air Pear Fan installation at Temple Cinema shows how destratification can make a meaningful impact in older buildings with uneven heating. Forier was able to preserve the historic charm of the theater while improving comfort and potentially lowering energy costs—all without disturbing the viewing experience.
